Recommended Settings to Optimize Performance of Inventor 2014/2015

Recommended Settings to Optimize Performance of Inventor 2014/2015

Issue:

Due to hardware limitations or complex models, you would like to optimize the settings in Inventor for performance.

Solution:

Configure Windows Visual Effects for Performance:

  1. Open a Windows Explorer > Right Click on the Computer and select Properties or browse to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsSystem
  2. Select Advance System Settings
  3. Select Settings in the Performance panel of the Advanced
  4. In the Visual Effect tab, Select the Adjust for best performance radio box to clear all options
  5. Next, select the Custom tab and check
  • Show thumbnails instead of icons
  • Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Below are suggestions for adjusting the Application Options to consume the least amount of resources.

Configure the Application Options in Autodesk Inventor:

Browse to  Tools ribbon >   Options panel  > Application Options:

General Tab
Show command prompting = Off
Enable Optimized Selection = On
Locate tolerance: Lower values can increase performance.
Undo file size (MB): Make sure there is enough free space on the specified partition to accommodate the size of the undo file. The undo file is written to the %temp% directory by default. Small undo files may be useful for Large Assembly work to preserve memory.
File Tab
Projects Folder: Working from your local drive is the preferred method. Avoid working on Autodesk Inventor files across a network. When working on a collaborative project, use Autodesk Vault for Data Management.
Colors Tab
Background = 1 Color
Enable Prehighlight = Off

*Note: Shadow options can effect performance for hardware supporting feature level 3.1 and lower. To find out which feature level your graphics card supports:
1. Select Diagnostics from the Hardware tab
2. In the displayed dialog box, under the AIRViz Device Manager, you find the information about the Feature Level supported by your hardware.
3. Turning off shadow effects will improve performance for lower feature levels.
Display Tab
Use Application settings = On

In “Settings…”:
Depth Dimming = Off
Display hidden edges dashed = Off
Display Silhouettes = Off
Ground Shadows = Off
Object Shadows = Off
Use Ray Tracing for Realistic Visual Style = Off
Ground Reflections = Off
Ground Plane = Off
Ambient Shadows = Off
Textures On = Off
Back to Display Tab
Display quality = Rough
View transition time (seconds)= 0
Minimum frame rate (Hz) = 20

Note: To maintain a high frame rate, the system sometimes simplifies or discards parts of the view.  Inventor will draw the largest objects first and smaller objects will drop out of the view as the model is panned, zoomed, or orbited. The view restores when movement ends.
Hardware Tab
Using the Performance option without software graphics enable is the optimal choice for performance. Some graphics card (e.g. gaming, or low-end graphics cards) will not be able to run in Performance mode. To insure optimal performance, use Direct3D graphics hardware. Be aware that memory consumption varies with different graphic cards. Review recommended video cards and other hardware components from the  Autodesk Certified Hardware web site.
Drawing Tab
Retrieve all model dimensions on view placement = OffDisplay line weights = Off
Show Preview As = Bounding Box
Section View Preview as Uncut = OnEnable background updates = On
Memory Saving Mode = OffThis option may allow you to create and edit drawing views of very large and/or highly complex models that would otherwise experience memory capacity limit issues. This option is also available in Document Settings and can be overridden on a per document basis within a drawing file. Memory Saving Mode

Note: Enabling Memory Saving Mode will increase capacity but will have a negative impact on performance. Drawing view creation and modification operations cannot be undone or reverted while the Memory Saving Mode option is enabled. The Undo/Redo commands in the application will be disabled as a result of enabling this option.
Sketch Tab
Gridlines = Off
Minor grid lines = OffNote: The below options may be edited to capability when required
Autoproject edges during curve creation = Off
Autoproject edges for sketch creation and edit = Off
Look at sketch plan on sketch creation = OffAuto-bend with 3D line creation=Off
Assembly Tab
Defer Update = On
Enable associative adge/loop geometry projection during in-place modeling = Off
Enable associative sketch geometry projection during in-place modeling=Off
