Getting to grips with Revit… What is it?

So, what is Revit?
Revit is a Building Information Modelling (BIM) tool that allows its users to create 3D models which can be used in various construction projects. Users such as engineers, structural engineers, architects and contractors can create intellectual 3D models and this in turn allows the user to work through a project with more efficiency and accuracy. Revit allows its users to work better as a team and aids better collaboration. The reason for this is that if the Architect, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and the Structural Engineers are all using Revit it allows them to coordinate with each other and live link each other’s models into their own.
Main Advantages of Revit
One of the biggest advantages to Revit is that if the Model is created correctly within the software, Revit can create BOQs (Bill of Quantities), schedules etc seamlessly as it will be automatically generated from the model that has been created. Furthermore, the users can apply costs to these schedules. This means that Revit can provide users a Single file which contains abundance of information about the project.
Revit versus AutoCAD
Unlike AutoCAD, when a Revit model is completed its users can easily create sheets from the floor pans and sections. They can do so by simply dragging and dropping them onto sheets. This is a huge benefit compared to for example AutoCAD where its users would have to create each individual view separately and create viewports for each view to place them on a sheet. Revit is 4D Building Information Modelling capable with tools to plan and track various stages in the building’s lifecycle, from concept to construction, and later maintenance and/or demolition.
