Autodesk Flex: All your questions answered

Autodesk has introduced updates to its licensing structure for select products. These changes cater to the evolving needs of businesses, ensuring greater flexibility and efficiency in licensing arrangements.

Autodesk Flex: All your questions answered

Since the introduction of the Flex tokens model, there has been a notable trend among our customers towards adopting a hybrid licensing approach. Autodesk Flex is a dynamic licensing solution designed to offer flexibility to users who require occasional access to Autodesk software. With Flex, you pay a daily rate for software usage, providing an alternative to longer-term subscriptions.

With this model in mind, the benefits of Autodesk Flex include:

  • Cost Efficiency: Pay only for the software you use, potentially saving you money compared to traditional subscription models.
  • Time Savings: Avoid the hassle of adding or removing users for different products mid-project, streamlining your workflow.
  • Enhanced Workflow: Utilise specialised tools for different stages in the design process, allowing for greater efficiency and creativity.

Having closely collaborated with our customers since the release of Flex tokens, we've gathered valuable insights and experiences, leading us to compile a comprehensive list of the most frequently asked questions regarding Flex Tokens. Keep reading to discover answers to these common queries and gain a deeper understanding of how Autodesk Flex tokens can empower your business.

The new pay as you go model introduced by Autodesk works by purchasing a pre-defined number of tokens for your occasional users. Whether you are starting a new project or are hiring a temporary staff member, Autodesk Flex Tokens are flexible to meet a variety of business needs, particularly for accessing Autodesk software. Each product has a different daily token amount.

With Autodesk Flex, you’ll only be charged a daily rate once every 24 hours when a user opens a product. Once the product is closed, the token charges will stop. To get started, all you need to do is purchase the relevant amount of Autodesk Flex tokens, assign users, and open your selected product which will automatically use up your purchased tokens. You can then track your token usage & spend.

You have one year from the purchase date to use your tokens for Flex. As Flex is a pay-as-you-go model, tokens do not roll over and you may purchase additional tokens at any time by contacting Symetri. Admins will receive a notification when you have a low balance.

Absolutely. Administrators have the flexibility to assign users to a combination of subscriptions and Flex tokens. In such cases, subscriptions take priority over tokens. For example, user Mary is assigned both a subscription to AutoCAD and Flex tokens. When she uses AutoCAD, her subscription will be used, and no tokens will be deducted. However, if she accesses Revit without a subscription, Flex tokens will be used.

Unfortunately, we're currently unable to accommodate the division of token packs among different teams. If you wish to acquire Flex tokens for multiple teams, please place a separate order for each team. Once your purchase is complete, you can log in to your Autodesk Account to allocate each order to its respective team. It's important to note that if you wish to transfer your Flex order to another team, the remaining token balance must be transferred in full.

You can purchase Flex tokens through Symetri. Contact us for more information.

If you or your team does not have enough tokens, users will lose access to Flex and will be unable to open the product. As Flex operates on a pay-as-you-go basis, users will be able to use products once more tokens are purchased.

Within your Autodesk Account, under the Reporting section, administrators have access to two valuable tools: the Usage Report and Token Usage. The Usage Report offers comprehensive insights into the activities of both subscription and token users. For more detailed information on token usage, including individual user data, the Token Usage page provides granular insights and analytics.

Yes, administrators have the flexibility to either grant access to all products covered by Flex to all users or to impose restrictions by limiting access to certain products or specific users.

Yes, close products you’re not using to avoid additional token charges. Tokens are charged once every 24 hours even if you are not actively using the product. It’s important to keep this in mind to avoid excess charges.

If you access a product by mistake, close the product immediately. Tokens will not be charged if you sign in and out within five minutes.

Yes, the minimum quantity of Flex tokens that can be ordered is 100.

While the licensing model offered by Autodesk Flex offers enhanced flexibility compared to the Autodesk subscription model, it's crucial to assess the usage frequency of both your regular and occasional users with Autodesk products.

For example, if your users access their Autodesk software for seven days or less per month, opting for Autodesk Flex would likely be a cost-effective solution. However, if your users utilise Autodesk products more frequently—such as twice a week or more—maintaining them on a single-user subscription licensing model would prove more economical.
