WorldSkills Ireland 2022

Mechanical 3D CAD Competition

Mechanical 3D CAD Competition

As the year draws to a close, it seems fitting to reflect on some of Symetri’s highlights of 2022! Our partnership with WorldSkills Ireland was certainly among them.

This year Symetri were proud Mechanical 3D CAD competition sponsors at WorldSkills Ireland 2022. It was our first year as sponsors at the event and we couldn’t be prouder of the work that was done in preparation for the competition or the enthusiasm our competitors displayed throughout the whole competition.

As part of our sponsorship with WorldSkills Ireland we offered anyone studying, training and/or working towards a relevant programme of study in 3D Computer Aided Design the opportunity to learn with Symetri for free, using Autodesk’s easy-to-use 3D modelling software, Fusion 360.

For anyone not familiar with Autodesk Fusion 360, it is a cloud-based 3D modelling, CAD, CAM, CAE and PCB software platform for product design and manufacturing. It connects your entire product development process in a single cloud-based platform that works on both Mac and PC. It combines industrial and mechanical design, simulation, collaboration, and machining in a single package.

Over a 4-month period we held bi-weekly virtual workshops, covering the key features of Fusion 360, and offered attendees the opportunity to sign up to compete in WorldSkills Ireland Mechanical 3D CAD competition through our mentorship programme. This mentorship programme was designed to fully prepare the successful candidates for the 3-day competition in RDS, Dublin, with additional training material, tutorial videos, 1:1 guidance from Symetri’s Fusion 360 experts and an intense 1-day workshop Boot Camp, which we were thrilled to be able to hold in person, in Limerick.

Upon completion of the Boot Camp, Symetri were delighted to have 5 extremely talented competitors go forward to compete and represent their colleges at WorldSkills Ireland and make for a very close competition.

Here’s what our competitors had to say about their WorldSkills Ireland experience with Symetri:

It was an ideal opportunity to challenge yourself and to show off your skills; both technical and mechanical, in learning a new, all-integrated CAD program (Fusion360).
Luke McCormack
It’s honestly very rewarding when you apply yourself and work hard to get to where you are and even if like myself you don't win, it really helps in the long run, as I am now ahead of majority of my peers and am more skilled in relation to CAD than most others.
Dean Byrne
It was a fantastic experience. There is honestly nothing I would change.
Jonathan Johnson
I have no regrets for taking on such a challenge, have met incredible individuals, and am excited for anyone thinking of doing it themselves. I would easily and whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone with an interest in CAD and digital modelling.
Oisín McPhillips
I really didn't expect to be the winner, but I still went to that award ceremony smiling after the event. It was intense, but great fun, and the people I met and got to know over the course of the mentorship program made it all worthwhile.
