What’s New: 3ds Max 2018.1

On June 8, Autodesk released 3ds Max 2018.1. and a big part of this release is the 3ds Max Interactive, a new feature of 3ds Max for authoring VR visualizations.

As you proceed through the documentation, keep an eye out for the  icon, indicating a new feature, and the  icon, indicating a change to an existing feature. You can also search for information about new or changed features.

For topics that describe new program features, search for “new feature”.

For changes in existing features, search for “changed feature”.

3ds Max Interactive:

3ds Max Interactive is now included with your 3ds Max subscription.

  • Modern game engine created for design visualization specialists and pro/indie game makers
  • 3ds Max Interactive Live Link provides unmatched connectivity with 3ds Max
  • Immersive and interactive
  • Simple workflows allow you to get started quickly and easily

Enhancements and Changes

Model Assist Model Assist is a new viewport visual style that provides you with improved feedback when working on models with no smoothing groups.
   
Scene Converter Improvements have been made when converting Autodesk Materials with the Slate Editor open.
   
Arnold Renderer Improved experience when you drag-and-drop materials.
   
Stability and Usability Improved the stability and usability of both the Unwrap UVW modifier and MAXScript Editor, as well as the stability of 3ds Max in general.
   
MCG Operators Added new MCG operators:

 

  • Match_Items_by_Distance
  • Match_Items_by_Index
  • Cycle_Index
  • Random_Transforms_on_Mesh_with_Max
   
Fixed issues This release had a strong focus on fixing issues and known limitations. For a complete list, see Release Notes.

 

The bottom line is VR is changing the way we work. The hardest part is getting started. By putting a stake in the ground and experimenting, you can begin integrating VR into your own design visualization practice.
